MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:

LOCAL MEMBERSHIP:

Undergraduate and graduate students can become local members at any time.

NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP:

Undergraduate students must have declared a major or minor in criminal justice or a related field, must have completed three full-time semesters and at least four courses in the criminal justice field. They must have a minimum GPA of a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale in both their cumulative and criminal justice classes by the time of induction.

Graduate students must be enrolled in a graduate program in criminal justice or a related field, have completed a minimum of four courses, and have a minimum of a 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Law students must be enrolled in law school and must have completed one academic year with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, on a 4.0 scale.

MEMBERSHIP FEES:

Alpha Phi Sigma collects two sets of membership fees; Local and National. These are collected separately and are non-refundable.

LOCAL:

Dues support the Chapter with various functions and memorabilia (e.g. socials, apparel, food, etc.)

Must make a one-time payment of $75.00 to begin local membership.Can be paid with cash, personal check, cashier’s check, or money order. Please make payable to Alpha Phi Sigma FIU.

NATIONAL:

Dues are sent to Headquarters by the chapter’s Executive Board for Induction.

Must make a one-time payment of $50.00 after fulfilling chapter’s requirements.

If National dues increase after payment is submitted and members have not yet been inducted, members will be required to pay the difference.

POINTS:

Members receive points for participation in a variety of activities. In order to be inducted a member must accumulate a total of 12 points from various categories, listed below:
Meetings: 4 points (1 each meeting)
Each month we hold a general meeting. Each meeting is worth 1 point. Members must attend at least 4 meetings to earn a total of 4 points to satisfy this requirement.

Community Service: 3 points (1 point each)
Members must earn at least 3 community service points, which can be done by attending various community service events throughout the semester. We will inform members of upcoming community service opportunities to help satisfy this requirement.

Fundraisers: 2 points (Personal Fundraiser 1 point + Participation in another member’s fundraiser 1 point)
Members must complete one personal fundraiser (1 point) and participate in another member’s fundraise (1 point).

To satisfy the fundraising requirement, a member must collect a total of $125. If members collaborate (one or two) on a fundraiser, the total amount raised will be divided among them.

Before a fundraiser can be held, a request must be submitted to the Chapter President or Vice President for approval. Once the fundraised has been approved, it will be posted on Orgsynnc.

Miscellaneous: 3 points
In addition to the above categories, members must earn an additional three points. These may be earned in a variety of ways. Online students who live outside the Miami area may complete this section with additional Community Service points.

Apparel on Campus (0.5 points, each member may earn a total of 1 point)

Social Events (1 point)
Attendance at any FIU Alpha Phi Sigma event

Recruitment (1 point)
This includes either conducting a recruitment presentation in a criminal justice class or recruiting an eligible member.

To conduct a class recruitment presentation, the member must obtain the approval of the professor to speak on behalf of Alpha Phi Sigma and must have the professor sign the Point Verification Form. Recruitment packets (available upon request) should be handed out at the presentation.

Members who attend an event must submit photographic documentation of attendance to the chapter at: aps_natl@fiu.edu
